Harvard Square Musicians' Workshop
July 20 musicians' workshop for experienced English musicians
Announcing a July summer's eve workshop for experienced English country dance musicians!
Sponsored by Country Dance Society, Boston Centre Harvard Square English Country Dance Committee.
Thursday, July 20, 2006, 7-10pm
Objectives: This workshop by dance pianist Jacqueline Schwab is for seasoned English country dance musicians to further hone their dance music skills—to explore ways to play with more confidence and ease, squeeze more juice out of the tunes, and empower ensemble playing. Depending on the interests of the group, Jacqueline may choose to focus on creating contrapuntal lines, ensemble arrangements and triage methods for sightreading difficult tunes on the fly. Participants will play as a larger group and also divide into smaller groups to explore these ideas. Suggested experience level: Participants should be comfortable sight-reading dance tunes up to tempo.
Jacqueline has passionately played for English country and other types of dancing for over thirty years. She is a founding member of the Bare Necessities quartet, which created a signature improvisational approach to playing for English country dancing. As a dance musician and caller, she has been on staff for dance events throughout the US and abroad, including leading many weeklong workshops for dance musicians. She has also been heard as the pianist on the soundtrack of eleven of Ken Burns' PBS documentaries, including his "Civil War," "Baseball," and "Mark Twain." Jacqueline enjoys exploring new ways to play for dancers and doesn't believe there is "one right way."
